Greenpeace comment on the results of the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024
Berlin, 12 June 2024 - Martin Kaiser, Managing Director of Greenpeace Germany, comments on the results of the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024 as follows:
"The future of Ukraine energy system lies in decentralisation by solar and wind. This should be the outcome of the Ukraine conference, which took place in the wake of the devastating destruction of Ukraine's energy system. Decentralisation of the energy supply by renewable energies is the order of the day, because it is easy for Russia's missiles to hit large centralised power plants. This is another reason why we do not need new nuclear power plants and new large coal-fired or gas-fired power plants, as proposed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy. Greenpeace presented a ‘Solar Marshall Plan for Ukraine’ that easily could increase the solar energy deployment in the Ukraine Plan five times. This would be a significant element of an emergency plan to harm the energy crisis
Unfortuantely, the Berlin Ukraine Conference failed to adequately include environmental aspects. On the positive side, however, civil society and municipalities were better represented than the last two Ukraine reconstruction conferences. Now, the Ukraine government with the help of EU needs to reform its energy market and strengthen financial support mechanisms to prepare the ground for the urgent deployment of renewable energies in the runup to the next winter season."
