BREAKING: Immediate suspension of the Turów operations!
The Court of Justice of the European Union ordersimmediate suspension of the Turów operations!
Warsaw, May 21, 2021 – Suspension of the operations of the Turów lignite mine is an interim measure in response to a complaint that the Czech government has brought regarding damage caused by the mine.
"European Court of Justice couldn't take any other decision in this situation. The Polish government has been ignoring the Czech concerns regarding the Turow mine and its harmful impacts for far too long. This situation could have been avoided if only the Polish government and PGE took seriously the need for planning the just transition and set a proper coal phase out timeline. Instead they decided to keep denying the reality and want to continue mining and burning coal in Turow by 2044. This is unacceptable. So now due to the irresponsibility of the government and PGE, the mine must now stop operating overnight. Hopefully the ECJ decision will act like a bucket of cold water on the government and PGE. There is no other way than to move away from coal within the next decade", says Joanna Flisowska, the head of the climate and energy team in Greenpeace Poland.
